Ariel Winter Says She Gets Horrible & Dirty DMs From Random Guys

Some people say the only way to stop online harassment is to stop going online. Well, we aren’t going anywhere. Reclaim Your Domain is Refinery29’s campaign to make the internet (and the world of outside it) a safer space for everyone — especially women.

Ariel Winter makes no apologies for her Instagram feed. Her body positive message resonates with a lot of people. She has over 3 million followers on the site. That positive reality comes with, unfortunately, another much darker reality. The Modern Family actress gets unwanted attention in the form of DMs from male strangers. Winter told Maxim about the online harassment in an exclusive interview with the magazine.

“I only read DMs from people I follow—because of the amount of gross DMs I got. I would look at them and be like, this is nasty…I’m not gonna reply to this,” she said in the interview. She admits that she can be a vulgar person, but she doesn’t respond to the vulgarity coming into her inbox.

Online harassment is a genuine concern for celebrities like Winter. Every time she posts a swimsuit photo from a vacation or a picture of herself in a cropped top and short shorts comment sections explode with both support and criticism. For example, when Winter shared a photo of her Coachella look, one commenter wrote: “It doesn’t matter what a woman dresses like she still deserves the same amount of respect.” Another wrote, “I did have respect for her, but over the last few months that has sadly gone now.” This issue will only increase with the release of Winter’s new movie, Dog Years, where she plays a character different in every way from her Alex Dunphy, Modern Family persona.

Rashida Jones, who is a producer of the Netflix series Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On, spoke to Refinery 29 about her comfort level with sharing on social media. She likens it to the old saying about comparing your insides to someone else’s outsides. She sees a generational difference between her and some of her younger peers. “But I will say that millennials are more at ease with transitioning back and forth from their public persona to their private life. I feel kind of sweaty when I’m trying to present myself on social media,” Jones said. Jones’s producing partner, Jill Bauer said, in the same interview, “I just can’t even imagine growing up now as a young woman and feeling all the pressures of social media. You’re bombarded and surrounded by it.”

From outward appearances, Winter seems to have her social media, and the responses from it, both the good and the “gross” under control. “If I take a good picture of my butt, it’s gonna go on the Internet. And you can enjoy it, or don’t,” she told Maxim.

Ed Sheeran's Game Of Thrones Cameo Is A Special Gift To One Of The Stars Of The Show

When Game of Thrones fans heard (via the internet, not raven) that Ed Sheeran would have a cameo in the epic show’s upcoming season, reactions varied, to say the least. But as more and more details revealed themselves, it’s become pretty clear that Sheeran’s screen time is probably not going to include any of his material. Screen Crush reports the singer explained that he will get to interact with one very special cast member, however.

“I just do a scene with Maisie. I sing a song and then she goes, ‘Oh, that’s a nice song,'” Sheeran said during an interview with The Hits Radio.

It’s especially good news for actor Maisie Williams, a self-confessed Sheeran superfan. While The Wrap reported that many of the show’s actors could count themselves as Sheerios, Williams is an especially enthusiastic fan. She loves him so much, in fact, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss cast Sheeran as a gift to her. That makes the fact that she’s getting her very own serenade especially sweet. Sheeran didn’t disclose which episode he’d appear in, so fans will have to keep their eyes and ears out for a particularly musical episode.

Sheeran added that he won’t be getting in on any of Game of Thrones ‘ trademark action. In an interview with Comic Book, he revealed that he won’t get a sex scene or endure a bloody battle sequence.

“I don’t die in it, I don’t die. I’m only in it for like five minutes,” he explained to the site.

Sheeran isn’t the first musician to head to Westeros. Rolling Stone ‘s encyclopedic chronicle of musical guests includes Coldplay’s Will Champion, who appeared in a band in one of the episodes leading up to the Red Wedding. Members of Sigur Rós had a cameo in another not-so-happy nuptial adventure: the wedding of Margaery Tyrell and Joffrey Lannister. And both Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody and the band Of Monsters and Men appeared as wandering troubadours in various episodes, so it looks like Sheeran’s rubbing shoulders with pretty good company.

Shannen Doherty Made A Huge Announcment About Her Breast Cancer

After announcing her diagnosis with breast cancer in March 2015 and documenting her treatment on social media, People reports that Shannen Doherty announced she’s now in remission. The actor shared much of her experience with her fans and the public throughout her journey, going so far as to thank her radiation machine and announce a lawsuit with her management team, which let her insurance lapse. But with the news of her relapse, it’s sure to be happier times ahead, as noted in an Instagram post that went live on Friday.

“Moments. They happen. Today was and is a moment. What does remission mean? I heard that word and have no idea how to react,” she captioned a photo of her sitting on the ground, face buried in the crook of her arm, presumably overwhelmed with the news. “Good news? YES. Overwhelming. YES. Now more waiting.”

//platform.instagram.com/en_US/embeds.js

It’s fitting that Doherty would announce the news on Instagram. She had used the photo-sharing platform regularly to give followers a way to join her, both in good times like this and in more difficult instances, such as when she announced cancer had spread to her lymph nodes. She also used Instagram to show her shaving her head, explain her decision to undergo a single mastectomy, and her constant struggle facing the many unknowns that come with chemotherapy and other treatments.

Doherty’s caption included an honest and heartbreaking addition. Though the remission is certainly good news, Doherty acknowledges that it’s not the end of her experience with cancer, it’s only the start of a whole new set of struggles: management and making more choices about her health.

“In the meantime, decisions. Reconstruction which is several surgeries,” she wrote. “Decision on taking a pill for the next five years that comes with its own set of problems and side effects. I am blessed, I know that. But for now…. remission. I’m going to just breathe. #cancerslayer.”

James Van Der Beek Can't Get Over This ONE Thing About Dawson's Creek

All of James Van Der Beek’s Dawson Creek feelings aren’t positive ones. After all, life can get complicated when the thing you are best known for happened 20 years ago and you still can’t shake it. There is one thing that triggers an instant negative reaction in the actor: the Dawson’s Creek theme song.

That’s right. Van Der Beek’s ears perk up every time “I Don’t Wait To Wait” by Paula Cole comes on. “If I was at karaoke and it started playing there’s a part of me – and I’m a fucking grown-ass man with four kids – that still wants to go hide under the table,” Van Der Beek said in an interview with The Guardian.

He told the UK-based media outlet that the song is a trigger. No matter where he hears it, even in a place as innocuous as a drug store, he is immediately transported back to that time of his life. Fans of Dawson’s Creek remember the hype and hysteria that the cast faced anytime the cast ventured off the North Carolina set of the teen drama. The show was a full-blown phenomenon. Even now, articles about Michelle Williams and Katie Holmes mention Dawson’s Creek, and Williams has a Golden Globe award on her mantle. For Van Der Beek, it was a time of high anxiety and self-doubt.

Fans should not get their hopes up for a reunion. In his interview with The Guardian, Van Der Beek cut that one off at the pass. Van Der Beek offered an answer right off the bat. “I felt pretty complete putting that one on the shelf and not looking at him again,” he said, talking about his character, Dawson Leery.

Next up for Van Der Beek the What Would Diplo Do? series for Vice that we told you about in January. Odds are there won’t be much Paula Cole that he has to avoid as Diplo. If you don’t want to wait, you can watch Van Der Beek as Diplo promoting the DJ’s summer tour, the Mad Decent Block Party. Van Der Beek, the emo-idol of our 90s dreams, even rides off on a white horse.

On Friday, Doherty took to Instagram to post an update — her cancer is in remission.

She posted: “Moments. They happen. Today was and is a moment. What does remission mean? I heard that word and have no idea how to react. Good news? YES. Overwhelming. YES. Now more waiting. As every single one of my fellow cancer family knows, the next five years is crucial. Reoccurrences happen all the time. Many of you have shared that very story with me. So with a heart that is certainly lighter, I wait. In the meantime, decisions. Reconstruction which is several surgeries.
